Patrick Aloysius Doherty, a resident of Marco Island FL, and formerly of Hyannis and Dedham, died Saturday, July 27, 2018 in Scituate, MA. Louie, as he was known to his family and friends, was born March 14, 1930 in County Mayo, Ireland, the son of John and Mary (Cooney) Doherty, and graduated from St. Patrick’s College in Ireland (the equivalent of an American High School).  He emigrated to the United States in 1949, at the age of 19, and worked for a year as an automobile mechanic for Kane’s Chevrolet in Dorchester until he was inducted into the US Army to serve during the Korean War. Louie was honorably discharged as a Corporal in December of 1953.  He was naturalized as a US Citizen in 1954.  In 1955 he married his beloved wife, Helen (Cradock) to whom he has been married for 62 years.  In 1960 Louie started working as a machinist for MIT Lincoln Labs in Bedford, where he stayed for 35 years until his retirement in 1995. Louie loved to spend time with family and friends; he was a favorite to be called on for his rendition of “Danny Boy” or I’ll Take You Home Again Kathleen”. He was a wonderful singer and enjoyed ballroom dancing with his Helen. He was a great story teller and frequently said that the secret to a long life and marriage was to share a laugh every day.  In addition to his wife Helen, of Jamaica Plain, he is the loving father of Maureen Debler, and her husband Will, of Walpole, Shawna Leary, and her husband David, of Mansfield, Michael Doherty and his wife Annie, of Burlington, and Sheila Perilli and her husband Robert, of North Attleboro, He was also the father of the late Patricia Nicholls, and the brother of the late Frances Doherty. Louie was the proud grandfather of 16, and great-grandfather of 4.

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, August 1st, from 8:30 to 10:30 AM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, Dedham, followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church, 420 High Street, Dedham  1 at 11:00 AM.  Private interment will be in the National Cemetery at Bourne at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorials in Patrick’s name may be made to Dana Farber/Brigham & Women’s Pediatric Cancer Center, 450 Brookline Ave. Boston, MA 02215.
