Richard Karl “Dick” Schafer, a Dedham resident since 1933, died Thursday, July 29, 2010 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He was 85.  Dick was born December 17, 1924 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the only son of Karl George, and Ann (Adamitis) Schafer.  He grew up in Dedham and graduated from Dedham High School with the Class of 1942.  Dick then joined the US Navy where he served on the USS Makin Island and went on to become a decorated Naval veteran.  After the war he worked as an electrician  for  General Motors in Framingham for 24 years until his retirement in 1988.  Dick was a member of American Legion Post 18 in Dedham, the Jacob Jones VFW Post 2017 in Dedham, the Dedham Retired Men’s Club, and the Dedham Seniors.  He and his wife were avid travelers and were known for their “smooth” style of dancing.  Dick is survived by his cherished and beloved wife of 63 years, Lottie Mary (Gustowski) Schafer; his two proud daughters, Kelly, and her husband Ralph Mercer, and Lori, and her husband Paul Newman; and his dear grandchildren, Robin (Giunchetto) Crehan, and her husband Tom, Rick Newman, and his wife Gena, and Sean Newman.  He was the great grandfather of Nora Crehan, Charleigh Newman, Jake Newman, and Sean Michael Newman, and the brother of Ann Kurpeski, and the late Kay Ceaser.  Visiting hours will be held Sunday, August 1st from 4 to 8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, Dedham.  Relatives and friends will gather at the funeral home Monday morning at 9 AM and proceed to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 24 Berwick Street, Norwood, Massachusetts for his funeral service at 10 o clock.  Burial will follow in the Gardens at Gethsemane Cemetery in West Roxbury.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Red Cross, 180 Rustcraft Road, Suite 115, Dedham, MA 02026 would be appreciated.
