Oscar A. Nietzel, a resident of Walpole for 13 years, and formerly of Dedham, died Monday, January 11, 2010 at the Stanley Tippett Home in Needham after a long illness. He was 82. Oscar was born April 4, 1927 in Boston, the son of Oscar Alfred and Sophie (Kaiser) Nietzel. He was raised in the Hyde Park section of Boston and graduated in 1951 from Boston College with a degree in chemistry. Oscar served as a steward’s mate first class in the Coast Guard during World War Two aboard the US Cutter Northland #49 (later replaced by the Cutter Northland #904), in the naval reserve, and as a second lieutenant in the US Army during the Korean War. He retired in 1986 from Texas Instruments in Attleboro after working for 29 years as the Manager for Manufacturing Engineering. He was a member of Constellation Lodge AF & AM of Dedham, the American Legion and the Dedham VFW. He was a former deacon at the Allin Congregational Church in Dedham where he was a longtime member. Oscar was dedicated to the youth of Dedham, serving as a Boy Scout Leader for Troop One, and was active in Dedham DeMolay. He had a passion for world travel, hiking, white water rafting, and a great appreciation for the Grand Canyon, our national parks, and nature. Oscar is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy M. (Dahlquist); his two sons, Steven T. Nietzel, and his wife Denise, and three “granddogs”, Midori, Ming, and Taiko, of Walpole, and Mark D. Nietzel, and his wife Karen, of Franklin; his two granddaughters, Nicole and Andrea Nietzel of Franklin; his two sisters, Barbara Payne of New Hampshire, and Helen Deatcher of Georgia; and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Memorial Service Saturday, February 6th at 9:30 AM at the Allin Congregational Church, 683 High Street, Dedham, followed by his burial with full military honors in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester. In lieu of flowers donations to the Allin Congregational Church, 683 High St., Dedham, MA 02026 or to the Stanley Tippett Home, 920 South Street, Needham, MA 02492 would be appreciated.
