Joan was born and raised in Mission Hill, the daughter of Theresa and Joseph Fitzpatrick. She graduated from Mission High School and married the love of her life, Larry Kenney in 1958. They began a family and raised seven children together in Hyde Park where Larry and his family operated Francis E. Kenney & Sons Funeral Home for 83 years.
Joan was a wonderful cook and she loved to be the hostess while throwing many wonderful parties. She was always the life of any social gathering and loved to make everyone around her laugh. Her favorite time of year was spending time with the Kenney and Fitzpatrick families around the holidays. The family spent many summers in Connecticut & Hull with the Fitzpatrick clan, and at local amusement parks with the kids.
Joan and Larry became avid travelers and enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas, Nashville and San Francisco. She was a woman of many hats (literally) and was adored by all who met her. She cherished spending time with her children and her 11 grandchildren, who knew her fondly as “Cuckoo Nana.” She loved to cook and prepared countless meals, especially Sunday dinners after church, for her family. In addition to hosting family dinners, the door of the Kenney household was always open to all and the home was frequently the gathering place for friends. Joan and Larry would not have it any other way.
Joan enjoyed a recuse on the front porch many mornings, proudly waving to Larry driving by in a funeral procession. Those were the cherished times for them. Afternoons, she would sit and wave to the countless friends of the Kenney Kids whether they be walking past the house or if they drove down the bustling River Street, they would respectfully stop at the house or toot the horn to say hello to Mrs. Kenney.
Joan’s strength, humor and unending spirit will be missed by all who knew her. Her family takes solace in knowing her undying faith in God has reunited her with her true love Larry.
