Edward “Eddie” W. Buttlar, age 98, of Valparaiso, IN, formerly of Dedham; Lexington; and South Berwick, ME, went to the Lord on Thursday, September 8, 2016. Born on April 19, 1918, in Dedham, he was a son of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Ringler) Buttlar of Dedham, MA. Eddie was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific, a member of the 51st Brigade on detached service in Task Force 6814 and the Americal Division. He then became a Warrant Officer, Jr. Grade at the 1st Island Command Headquarters. Later, he served at the 1101st Convalescent Hospital at Camp Edwards, MA. He retired from the Walter E. Fernald State School in Waltham, MA. He was also a life member of the Americal Division Veterans Association and of the International Lions Club. He was an active member of the VFW Post 988. Eddie also volunteered at the Banta Activity Center. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Valparaiso, IN. He liked to bring joy and happiness to all those around him and always had a smile and a kind word. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. In addition to his parents, Eddie was preceded in death by his wife Muriel Janet Buttlar in 1993; his brothers Harold and Robert; his sisters Mildred Buttlar, Elizabeth Luce, Louise Linneken, Dora Brauer, and Agnes Surette; and grandson Alexander Clarke. Surviving are his daughters, Nancy (John) Bernthal of Valparaiso and Jan Buttlar Clarke of Beaver Falls, Pa.; three grandsons Daniel DiPrisco, Benjamin Bernthal, and Victor Clarke; one great granddaughter, Holly DiPrisco, and many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received on Monday, September 19, 2016 from 11AM-1PM the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton St., Dedham. Graveside service to follow at the Brookdale Cemetery in Dedham.
