Edith (Smith) Spence, a resident of New Pond Village in Walpole for the last 8 years, and formerly of Dedham for over 50 years, died Monday, March 21, 2011 at Briarwood Healthcare Center in Needham. She was 97. Edith was born April 29, 1913 in Fall River, Massachusetts, one of the three children of George C. and Mary B. (Gray) Smith. She graduated from Jamaica Plain High School and went on to a varied work history which included working for a dentist in Jamaica Plain, selling real estate in Jamaica Plain, and working as a legal secretary for her husband, the late Attorney J. Walter Spence. Edith was a member of the Dedham Women’s Club, and an active member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Dedham. She was the sister of the late George Smith and the late Katheryn Bacon; and is the sister-in-law of Ardith Smith of Needham, and Harry and Marge Spence of Norwood. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services for Edith which will be held at Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton on Tuesday, March 29th at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory to St. John’s United Methodist Church, 61 Fairview Street, Dedham, MA 02026 would be appreciated.
