Herbert “Herb” Alston Packard, of Mansfield, passed away on December 24, 2013 at the age of 86.  Herb was born in Hyde Park, MA, and was the son of Ernest and Dorothy (West) Packard. Herb grew up in Westwood and went to school there until he joined the United States Army, serving during World War II.  Over the years, Herb worked as a  graphic artist and designer for Texas Instruments, Gustafson Advertising in Attleboro, Raytheon, Attleboro Trust Company, and numerous other local manufacturers.   Herb was an extremely talented artist.  After being honorably discharged from the Army, he went back to school and got his formal training in art at the Vesper George School of Art in Boston.  Herb’s artwork has been in numerous collections and exhibits throught eastern Massachusetts.  Much of his artwork is based on the scenery found in the areas where he spent much of his time such as Westwood, Dedham, and Cape Cod.  Herb was the beloved husband of Carol (MacKenney) and dear father to Steven E. Packard of Foxboro, and the late Douglas Packard, grandfather to four, and great-grandfather to five.  Herb was the brother of Mabel Badger, and the late Ernest Packard.  A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Westwood, 808 High Street, Westwood , MA 02090.  Donations in Herbs name can be made to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 808 High Street, Westwood MA 02090, or to the Mansfield Ambulence Fund, 6 Park Road, Mansfield, MA 02048.
