Emma Frances (Inman) Lloyd, a resident of Fox Hill Village in Westwood, formerly of Westerly, RI, died April 22, 2010 at her home in Fox Hill Village. She celebrated her 105 th birthday on April 10, 2010 with her extended family of 38 present. Emma was born on April 10, 1905 in Bridgeton, RI, the daughter of Lester Eugene and Frances Hayward (Ela) Inman. She grew up in Bridgeton, RI, graduated from Burrillville High School, and attended Wheaton College in Norton, MA where she graduated in the class of 1927. For many years Mrs. Lloyd was her Class Agent at Wheaton College and was instrumental in urging her classmates to contribute to the college. In 2007 she attended her 80 th college reunion at Wheaton College, and was honored for her many years of service to the college. She taught school in Belchertown, MA and Danielson, CT for three years before her marriage to Leon A. Lloyd in 1930. Emma and Leon moved to Westerly, RI in 1933, where they raised their family. Leon Lloyd died in 1983, and Mrs. Lloyd remained in Westerly until 1998 when she moved to Fox Hill Village in Westwood, MA. At Fox Hill Village she joined the Welcoming Committee and was among the first to welcome newcomers – and gained many new friends.
Mrs. Lloyd was a member of Central Baptist Church in Westerly, RI for more than seventy years where she served as Superintendent of the Junior Sunday School Department, Circle Chairman, Member of Circle 2 of the Women’s Society, and a long-time member of the Music Committee – serving over 19 years as Chair.
She was a volunteer at the Westerly Hospital beginning in 1963, and in 1993 she received the First Annual Volunteer of the Year Award having served over 2000 hours. Emma was a member of the Westerly College Club, the Sokvobek Reading Club, a Docent at the Babcock-Smith House, a member of the YMCA Garden Club, and belonged to three bridge clubs. She continued to play bridge at Fox Hill Village up until her death.
Mrs. Lloyd received numerous awards including the YMCA Service to Youth Award, and was honored by the Girl Scouts after 35 years of active service as Treasurer, Troop Leader, Neighborhood Chairman, and Commissioner. She and her husband were very involved with the camping programs at the RI Girl Scout Camp Hoffman, and Camp Wahaneeta in Westerly area. Several weeks ago she was named the ‘Honorary Cookie Chairman’ for the Eastern Massachusetts Girl Scout Council.
Emma Lloyd is survived by three children: Edith Lloyd Clark and husband Albert H. Clark of Hendersonville, NC; Barbara Lloyd Hayes and husband Samuel L. Hayes of Westwood, MA; and David Allen Lloyd and wife Aldra B. Lloyd of Hague, VA. She leaves eight grandchildren: Cynthia A. Clark and family of Oxford, NC; Kathryn C. Wells and family of Hendersonville, NC; Constance C. Vaughan and family of Jacksonville, FL; Elizabeth H. Wilson of Cambridge, MA; Susan L. Hayes and family of New York City, NY; Judith L. Hayes and family of San Francisco, CA; Mark D. Lloyd and family of Hadley, MA; and Kimberly L. Wendkos and family of Arnold, MD; and also seventeen great-grandchildren.
In Westwood, Mrs. Lloyd attended First Parish of Westwood. A Memorial Service for Mrs. Lloyd will be held at First Parish of Westwood at 10:00 A.M on Monday, May 3, 2010, followed by a ‘Gathering of Friends’ at Fox Hill Village. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wheaton College, 26 East Main Street, Norton, MA 02766, Central Baptist Church, 16 Elm Street, Westerly RI, 02891, or First Parish of Westwood, 340 Clapboardtree Street, Westwood, MA 02090.
