Audrey “Johnnie” Johnson Dole died on June 28th after a short illness from pancreatic cancer at the age of 87. She was born in Jamestown, New York and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1949. In 1955 Johnnie married William P. Dole of Melrose. They settled in Wellesley and she became active and a board member of the Wellesley Service League, the Wellesley Tennis Association and the Wellesley Garden Study Group. She was also a member of Brae Burn Country for over 40 years and was its first woman Director. Johnnie also served on the board of the New England Farm and Garden Club and the Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts as State Tournament Chairman.
After raising their family in Wellesley the Doles moved and at different times had homes in Weston, Boston, Osterville and Fox Hill Village in Westwood. Johnnie loved the City of Boston and was a member of the Chilton Club. In Osterville, her second home for many years, she was a member of the Wianno Club. Sports, travel, reading and bridge filled her days. She loved all music from Country to Opera. She was an enthusiastic competitor in tennis, golf and bridge. She loved planning trips and traveling. She traveled to all 50 States, all of Europe and all Continents except Antarctica.
Johnnie kept contact with many close friends from all periods of her life and always loved meeting and making new friends. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, William, their daughter Elizabeth Dole of Florida, their son William “Kip” Dole, daughter-in-law Vivian and grand children, William and Alyssa Dole of Wellesley, her sister Sandy Porter and husband David Porter of Concord, niece Sue Williamson and husband, Todd, of Wellesley, nephew John Porter of Colorado, and sister-in-law Susan Dole of Brookline. A memorial will be held on July 12 at 2PM at Fox Hill Village, 10 Longwood Dr., Westwood. Interment will be private.
