Soderstrom, Trudie K.
Trudie Kathryn (Rose)Soderstrom, 88 years old, of Dedham, MA, died peacefully on Friday, April 16 after courageously facing a two-year challenge with ALS. A longtime resident of Orleans and Walpole with degrees from Simmons College and Tufts University, Trudie worked as a nutritionist and then as a home-maker extraordinaire. Her passions included gardening and harvesting an over-abundance of flowers, fruits, and vegetables with her husband of 64 years, Rolf Soderstrom. She also loved creating amazing meals and gatherings with rich and humorous conversation, searching for seaglass and heart rocks on the outer beaches of Cape Cod, and traveling and learning about new cultures and religions. Throughout her life, she supported her family, friends and community in so many loving ways. In her death, she joins her parents, Carl Henry and Ottilie Kathryn (Mailandt) Rose and her brother and sister-in-law Ernest and Betsy Ciriack. She is survived by her husband Rolf Soderstrom, her son and daughter-in-law Mark and Lourdes Soderstrom of West Kingston, RI, her daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth Soderstrom and Steve Rothert of Nevada City, CA, her son and son-in-law Christian Soderstrom and Timothy Paquette-Soderstrom of Providence, RI, her daughter and son-in-law Elaine and Frank Anderson of Ann Arbor, MI, and eight wonderful, creative and smart grandchildren, all of whom inherited their grandmother’s love of cooking and the ocean. A private memorial and interment will be held in her honor. Memorial donations in Trudie’s name may be made to the Asssociation to Preserve Cape Cod.
Trudy was always so kind to me. Always welcoming, always smiling and laughing. I don’t know how many peanut butter and jelly sandwiches she made for me when I was a kid, but it was a lot! Her Thanksgiving dinners at Country Club Drive were epic.
I was lucky to grow up across the street from her and the whole Soderstrom clan. My condolences and love to you all.
Dear Beth and Elaine,
I just read in the Globe the lovely words about your mother. I knew from your posts, Beth, that she had been ill for some time. I am thinking of you. I well remember when my mother and father died. Although expected, the moment I got the news, I felt that jolt as if it could not possibly be true. So to a degree, I can understand what you all are feeling now. I remember your parents well, their endless support of you both and the joy they exuded every time I had the chance to see them. I send my love and good wishes to you and to your family….tim
Jason, Francesca and I send our love and condolences to the whole Soderstrom family. We remember fondly Trudie and Rolf’s visits to Nevada City, most notably Trudie’s warmth and quintessential maternal presence. I will forever be grateful for how Trudie welcomed Francesca into the Soderstrom home during summer visits to the Cape. The Soderstroms always made Francesca feel like one of the family. I know Francesca will lovingly remember Mimi, who she refers to as, “the cutest grandmother ever.” We are with you in spirit, Elizabeth and Tova (and all), as you grieve the loss of your loving mother and grandmother.
Dear Soderstrom Clan-
So, so many fond memories of your mother and her amazing meals, gardens and hospitality at your beautiful HarwichPort home.
We loved stopping by your corner home on the way to Wychmere or the way back! Your Mom was so welcoming and created such wonderful family meals and included your friends. What an amazingly talented and hospitable woman she was…so accomplished!
God bless you all.
Much Love and fond memories- Lorraine LeFort O’Halloran
My mom, a friend of Trudie’s from age 3, told me many stories of their life-long friendship. Trudie was a constant presence in her life. Rolf was a dear and treasured friend of my dad and mom. Because of their relationships, I felt a bond with Trudie and Rolf. I heard about their children and grandchildren, their travels, their garden, and Trudie’s fabulous meals.
I admired Trudie, her intelligence, her strength, her opinions, her cleverness. She was a gutsy woman.
Love and sympathies to Rolf, Christian, Mark, Elizabeth, Elaine, and all the grandkids from the Thurston family.
Trudie was one of a kind. Our world will miss her and her beloved sidekick, Rolf. The Halesworth family sends our condolences to the Soderstrom family and their immeasurable losses. May Trudie and Rolf’s indomitable spirits and zest for life live on in your family for generations to come. – Peter Halesworth and Family
