Whalen, Jarlath J.
Jarlath Joseph Whalen, a resident of Westwood, and formerly of Roslindale and Dedham, died peacefully on the Feast of the Transfiguration, August 6, 2018 surrounded by his family at the Thomas Upham House in Medfield. He was 92. Jarlath was the beloved husband of Elsie (Fagnani) for over 60 years and the devoted father to Barbaramary Horgan, and her husband Fred, of Walpole, and Anthony Whalen and his wife Najat Hasrouni, of Holliston. He was the proud grandfather to Elizabeth Horgan Pruitt, and her husband Richard, of Norwood, Margaret Mary “Meg” Horgan of Chicago, the late Catherine Martha, Mary Theresa of Holliston, and his special loves, grandson Joseph of Holliston and great granddaughter Penelope Pruitt. Jarlath was the son of the late Patrick and Barbara (Flaherty) Whalen and brother of the late Barbara Whalen. A WWII paratrooper, he was injured at the Battle of the Bulge. After retiring as an investigator for the Social Security Administration, he did phone sales for St. Anthony’s Messenger and Liguorian Magazine. He was a daily communicant, Third Order of Carmelites, a Knight of Columbus, member of the Legion of Mary and in years past, a Catholic service volunteer at many area nursing homes. Visitation 4-7 pm Thursday, Folsom Funeral Services, 649 High Street, Westwood, MA. Relatives and friends will gather at the funeral home starting at 10:30 am and proceed to his Mass of Christian Burial at St. Margaret Mary Church, 845 High St, Westwood, MA on Friday at 11:30 am. Interment will be in New Calvary Cemetery, Roslindale.
Jarlath will be missed here at Highland Glen. He was a wonderful neighbor of mine for the last ten years, and I enjoyed talking with him at the parties and after church every Sunday where he and Elsie attended. He was a true gentleman!
