James Walter Murphy, a resident of West Roxbury, died Sunday, June 24, 2018 at the West Roxbury Veterans Administration Hospital. He was 70. James was born July 11, 1947 in Boston, Massachusetts the son of Walter and Irene (Brodeur) Murphy. After high school he joined the US Marine Corps and served for four year until his honorable discharge in 1970. James worked for over 40 years as a clerk at the Roslindale Post Office until his retirement in 2009. He was a former member of the American Legion and of the Roslindale Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed sports and had an affinity for scratch tickets and the horses. James is survived by his wife, Bettie Ann (Moye) Murphy; his son, William J. Murphy of Indianna; his daughters, Nancy Murphy, and her longtime partner Jason, of Boston; his brother, Thomas of Ashland; and his five grandchildren, Kaylee, Leah, William, Ryan, and Allison. He was the brother of the late Catherine Van Schaick. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, June 27th from 4 to 8 pm at the Folsom Funeral Home, 63 Belgrade Avenue, Roslindale. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Thursday at 10 am at the funeral home followed by interment with military honors at the National Cemetery at Bourne at 1 pm.
