Sunderland, the Rev. Edwin S.S.
Edwin S.S. Sunderland, Jr., 91, died peacefully at Fox Hill in Westwood, MA, on May 12, following a long illness. Born and raised in New York with his late sister, Joan Scribner, he graduated from St. Mark’s School Harvard College, Harvard Law School, and the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkley. A priest in the Episcopal Church, he was a research student at Selwyn College, Cambridge (UK) and assistant chaplain at Trinity Hall in the early 1960s. After serving as rector of two Massachusetts parishes he was appointed canon of the Episcopal Cathedral in Boston. A specialist in canon law, he taught at General Theological Seminary and the Virginia Theological Seminary. His book on English canon law, Dibdin and the English Establishment, was published in 1995. He is survived by his wife Phyllis and his daughters Susannah and Emily. Private burial service at Mount Auburn.
