Knarr, Helen G.
Helen Gladys Knarr, a resident of Edelweiss Village in West Roxbury, and formerly of Dedham, died Tueday, May 17, 2016 at the Deutsches Altenheim Nursing Home in West Roxbury. She was a month short of her 103rd birthday. Helen was born June 11, 1913 in Boston, Massachusetts and was the last surviving child of the seven children of George and Margaret (Meister) Knarr, immigrants from Germany. She worked as a teacher and administrator for Roxbury Community College for 39 years and then at the Boston Business School from which she retired in 1975. Helen enjoyed swimming, bowling, golf and sewing. She also loved worldwide travelling, and was an avid reader who turned to listening to audio books as her vision failed her. She was a lifelong member of the Allin Congregational Church in Dedham. Helen was never married, but is survived by two grandnieces, Sharon Hofgesang, and her husband Reinhard, of Mt. Prospect, Illinois, and Shirley Sharkey, and her husband Dennis, of Chicago, Illinois; a grandnephew, William Knarr of Chicago, Illinois; as well as many great grand nieces and nephews, and great great grand nieces and nephews. Helen was the sister of the late Henry, John, Fred, Charles, Otto, and Emily Knarr. Visiting hours will be held Friday, May 20th from 10 to 11 am at the Folsom Funeral Home, 63 Belgrade Avenue, Roslindale. Her funeral service will be held immediately after the visiting hour, at 11 o clock. Burial will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery, Boston. In lieu of flowers donations to the Perkins School for the Blind, 175 North Beacon Street, Watertown, MA 02472 would be appreciated.
I was very sorry to hear of Helen’s passing. It was a pleasure getting to know her at Edelweiss Village. I always think fondly of her.
