Hurney, John H.
John Henry Hurney Jr., a longtime resident of Roslindale, died Wednesday, April 13th, 2016 at his apartment in Roslindale. He was 76. John was born June 7, 1939 in Boston, Massachusetts, the only son of John Henry Sr., and Ruth Eleanor (Sodekson) Hurney. He worked as a shipyard welder and then spent 28 years as a School Police Officer for the City of Boston working at the Boston Technical High School, Roxbury High School, and Madison High School until his retirement in 2004. John was a member of VFW Post 1050 in Roslindale and of the Stoughton Gun Club. He enjoyed collecting knives, fishing and camping. He was the father of the late Kevin M. Hurney. John is survived by his wife, Sheila Mae (Chipman) Hurney; his nine children, Thomas P. Hurney of Quincy, John H. Hurney III of New Hampshire, Elizabeth M. Weir of Millis, Erin L. Schiavo of Norwood, Jeanie Vieira of Norwood, Maureen T. Shurtleff of Taunton, Richard P. Hurney of Barcelona, Spain, Katie Dunham of Ashland, and Sean Hurney of Roslindale; his sister, Roberta Griego of Plymouth; his nephew, Eric Schaffer of Michigan; 19 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held Monday, April 18th from 4 to 8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 63 Belgrade Avenue, Roslindale. Relatives and friends will gather at the funeral home starting at 9 am on Tuesday, April 19th and process with us to Holy Name Church, Centre Street, West Roxbury for his Mass of Christian Burial at 10 o clock. Interment with military honors will follow in the Gardens at Gethsemane Cemetery, Baker Street, West Roxbury. Donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 20 N. Main Street, #104, Natick, MA 01760 would be appreciated.
