Towne, George Warren
George Warren Towne, a resident of Westwood for over 70 years, died Monday, May 11th at his home. He was 90. Mr. Towne was born in Canton, a son of the late Harry F., and Adelaide (Clarke) Towne. He graduated from Norwood High School with the Class of 1936. Warren served as a corporal in the 1st Battalion, 341st Infantry Regiment of the US Army during WW2, and fought in both the European and Pacific campaigns. He worked as a firefighter with the Westwood Fire Department for 28 years until his retirement in 1983. Through the Home for Little Wanderers, he and his wife housed and nurtured over 250 children over the course of 20 years. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marion L. (Weed); his three sons, George W. Jr., and his wife Robin, of Australia, Donald B., and his wife Elizabeth, of Norwood, and Eric A. of Westwood; his daughter Marilyn Flynn, and her husband Arthur, of Foxboro; his brother, Richard J. of Falmouth; his sister, Mary Cushing of Watch Hill, RI; as well as 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He was the father of the late Richard J. Towne and the late David S. Towne, and the late Merrill and Lee Towne. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Thursday at 11 AM at the First Baptist Church, 808 High St., Westwood. Burial will be private. Visiting hours Wed 4-8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High St., Westwood. In lieu of flowers donations to the Westwood Firefighter’s Relief Assoc., PO Box 382, Westwood, MA 02090 would be appreciated.
