Gustaf Lennart “Lenny” Gustafson, a resident of Dedham for 62 years, died Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at the E.N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford. He was 90. Lenny was born March 27, 1923 in North Easton, Massachusetts, a son of Gustaf W. and Hedvig A. (Olson) Gustafson, immigrants from Sweden. He graduated from Oliver Ames High School in North Easton, and studied mechanical engineering for a year at Northeastern University in Boston before being inducted into the US Navy during World War Two. Lenny served as a Fire Controlman, Third Class abord the USS Wilkes Barre which earned four battle stars for its service in the Philippines and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. After his honorable discharge Lenny worked as an electrical engineer for the Arthur D. Little Company and then at Harvard University, where he worked on the Cambridge electron accelerator. He retired in 1986 from the C.T. Main Corporation of Boston. Lenny was an active member of the Allin Congregational Church in Dedham; a member of Constellation Lodge AF & AM (now Celestial Lodge); a member of the Dedham Retired Men’s Club; and a Member of the Dedham Greenhouse. He enjoyed teaching gardening at the Greenlodge Elementary School in Dedham. Lenny was the husband of the late Virginia Anna (Gray) Gustafon who predeceased him in 2011, and the brother of the late Arnold Gustafson and the late Bertil Gustafson. He is survived by his daughter, Sharon D. Gustafson, and her husband Gary Russell, of San Tan Valley, Arizona; his two sons, Glenn G. Gustafson of Dedham, and Lee M. Gustafson, and his wife Lisa, of Foxboro; and his brother, Vernon Gustafson of Naples, Florida. Visiting hours will be held Sunday, November 17th from 2 to 6 PM with a Masonic Service by Celestial Lodge AF & AM at 5 o clock at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, Dedham. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Monday at 10 AM at the Allin Congregational Church, 683 High Street, Dedham followed by interment with naval military honors at South Easton Cemetery in Easton, MA. In lieu of flowers donations to Voluntary Service, EMRM VA Hospital, 200 Springs Road, Bedford, MA 01730. Checks should be made out to Voluntary Service and please write in the memo section of the check “Activities for Unit 62AB”.
