Carpenter, Joyce E. (Gardner)

Joyce Evelyn (Gardner) Carpenter, a resident of Westwood for over 35 years, died Sunday, March 31, 2013 at the Milton Hospital in Milton.  She was 84.  Joyce was born December 14, 1928 in Northampton, England, the daughter of Sidney and Isabelle (Buthee) Gardner.  She immigrated to the United States in 1965 and worked for over 35 years until her retirement in 2002, as the Vice President of the Ideal Marketing Group in Needham.  Joyce was the wife of the late John Francis Carpenter; the mother of the late James Carpenter; and the sister of the late David Gardner, and the late Christine Miles.  She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Carpenter of East Boston; three granddaughters, Holly Carpenter, Jamie Mabardy, and Monica Carpenter; and three great grandchildren, Jason J. Seguer, Lilly J. Ripley, and Jayden R. Carpenter.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Memorial Service Friday, April 12th at 10 AM at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 95 Deerfield Avenue, Westwood followed by interment in New Westwood Cemetery. Joyce was a
loving mother, a devoted wife, a trusted and respected business colleague, and a loyal friend.  She was a spiritual person, and was very attached to and involved in her church.  She loved cooking, was an avid reader, and loved painting and sewing.  Joyce adored her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, who brought her so much joy.  She was very proud of her family, and spoke often of them. She loved needlework and crocheting, and was particularly fond of music and the arts. She was a kind, generous soul who took a great interest in others and derived great joy from the world around her. Joyce was no stranger to hardship, yet she was always positive and optimistic, and never complained.  She had great strength of character, and loved learning new things.  She treated each day as a precious gift, was greatly admired by those around her, and will be sadly missed, but never forgotten by all those whose lives she touched.

I knew Joyce for all the years she worked at my husband’s business. She was smart, capable and extremely loyal. She became a vice president and ran the office incredibly well. Unfortunately, her health deteriorated during her latter years, but she continued to work and never complained. I have not seen her for many years, but will always remember her as a very classy lady.

I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to Joyce’s family. My heart was saddened over the news of Joyce’s passing. She was a remarkable woman whom I feel honored to have touched my life and that of my children. Her wisdom will not be forgotten.

We were away on holiday in Peru when the news came through that Auntie Joyce had died. She was the last surviving aunt of that generation. We have very fond memories of both John and Joyce in England before they emigrated and subsequently on the occasions when we visited them in the States. They always made us so welcome and were a very special Aunt and Uncle. Our only regret is that we didn’t visit them more often and that we didn’t come to see Joyce after John died. Our thoughts are with Holly, Sarah and family at this time.
