Johnson, Ivar E.
Ivar Emanuel Johnson, 96, died August 13, 2012 at Norwood Hospital. He was the husband of the late Eleanor (Fairbanks) Johnson. Born in Norwood on November 12, 1915, Ivar was one of six children of Axel and Elsa (Swanson) Johnson who emigrated from Sweden. After graduating from Norwood High School, Ivar worked in his father’s grocery store on Walnut Avenue. He later worked at the Norwood tannery. He was a painter for several decorating companies until his retirement thirty years ago.
He and Eleanor married in 1938 and two years later built a house in Westwood where they lived the rest of their lives. There they raised three children. Ivar enjoyed gardening, bridge playing and following the Patriots. He was an active Mason, member of Celestial Lodge, AF & AM and recently received his 40 year pin. He and Eleanor were long time members of the First Parish of Westwood United Church, active in the Couples Club for many years. He leaves his three children; David and his wife Elaine of Wareham, Marjorie of North Attleboro, and Dianne Sullivan and husband Charles of Walpole, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Burial will be private. A memorial service will be held at the First Parish of Westwood United Church, 340 Clapboardtree St., Westwood on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at 2PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ivar’s memory may be sent to First Parish of Westwood United Church at the address listed above.
