McDermott, Jack

John James “Jack” McDermott, Jr., a lifelong resident of Dedham, died Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at the Ellis Nursing Home in Norwood.   He was 85.  Jack was born May 4, 1926 in Boston, Massachusetts, the only son of John James Sr. and Emily (DeCoste) McDermott.  Jack grew up in Dedham and graduated from Dedham High School.  He served his country in the US Navy during World War Two.  Jack worked as a Dedham firefighter for 15 years before he purchased the Old Mill Cafe in East Dedham which he and his wife Shirlee operated for the next 15 years.  He retired in 1994 after working as a Court Officer in the Dedham Probate Court for over 20 years.  Jack was a member of the Wompatuck Country Club in Canton, a member of the VFP Post 2017 of Dedham, and a member of the American Legion Post 18, of Dedham.  Jack was the husband of the late Shirlee M. (Carlson) McDermott; the father of the late Doreen E. Todesca, and the late Douglas W. McDermott; and the brother of the late Bernadette Lavangie and the late Ellen Moloney.  He is survived by his son, John J. McDermott III, and his wife Paulette, of Cranston, Rhode Island; his daughter, Cindee M. McDermott of Dedham; his three grandchildren, Tina LaMarche, Aaron J. McDermott, and Troy D. Korhonen; and his great grandson, Grady LaMarche.  Visiting hours will be held Friday, October 21st from 4 to 8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, Dedham.  Relatives and friends will gather at the funeral home Saturday at 8 AM and proceed to his Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church, 420 High St, Dedham at 9 o clock.  Burial with military honors will be in Brookdale Cemetery in Dedham.

    If not for “Uncle Mac” my Mother would still be trying to figure out how to get to the hospital so I could be born….That day was the first of many times he had a tremendous impact on my life and he will be greatly missed.

    Rest in Peace Jackie. The face of Border Street has changed again. When we were kids you let us ride in the trailer to the dump! It took so little to thrill us back then. Many winter mornings you drove us to school, and in the summer the pool was open to everyone. God bless.
