Smith, Vera Ray
Vera Ray (Eustace) Smith, a resident of Roslindale since 1952, died Saturday, August 30th, 2008 at the Mass General Hospital in Boston after a brief illness. She was 97. Vera was born in Codroy, Newfoundland, Canada on June 25, 1911 to John Henry and Marcella (Gallop) Eustace. She grew up in Canada and moved to the United States in 1930. She studied nursing at the Cambridge Hospital Training School and then served in the US Army Nurse Corp as a Lieutenant during World War Two. Vera worked for 25 years as a registered nurse at the Mass General Hospital in Boston until her retirement in 1976. She was a member of the Mount Auburn Alumni Association and active member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in West Roxbury. She was the wife of the late Richard S. Smith and sister of the late E. Carter Eustace, Cyrus Eustace, Mansell Eustace, Mina Anderson and Patricia E. Shano. Vera is survived by her son Richard Bruce Smith of Roslindale; her daughter, Barbara Rae Nagle of Woodhaven, Michigan; her sister, Margaret E. Malloy of Delta, British Columbia, Canada; as well as 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours were held Wednesday, Sept 3rd from 4-8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 63 Belgrade Avenue, Roslindale. Vera’s Funeral was held Thursday, Sept 4th at 11 AM at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 21 Stratford Street, West Roxbury, MA, 02132 followed by burial with military honors at Mount Hope Cemetery in Boston.
