Colwell, Calvin W.

Calvin Wesley Colwell, a longtime resident of Westwood, died Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He was 91. Cal was born October 9, 1933 in Medford, Massachusetts, one of the four children of Wesley Robert and Helen Eliza (Tower) Colwell, immigrants from New Brunswick, Canada. He earned his Associate Degree from Curry College in Milton where he took general business courses. Cal was a second generation builder having followed his father in the construction trade. He founded Hoover Realty Trust where he worked alongside his son Scott. Cal was a longtime member of the Builders and Remodelers Association of Greater Boston and was proud to be inducted into their Hall of Fame. he was a member and multiple time President of the Dedham Lions Club and was bestowed with the Melvin Jones Award by them. he was also a longtime member of the Islington Community Church where he served for many years on the Board of Trustees. When the Islington Church closed he joined the First Baptist Church of Westwood and served there on the Board of Trustees, sharing his extensive facilities maintenance knowledge. Cal was an avid fisherman and a member of the Norfolk Trout Club. He also enjoyed sports and was a Boston Bruins season ticket holder for 63 years. He took delight in supporting his grandson’s football at Xaverian High School. Cal always looked forward to family gatherings at his lakeside home on Lake Winnipesaukee in Meredith, New Hampshire where he was “Master of the Grill” especially for his prime ribs. Cal was the husband for 65 years of the late Carole Jeanne (Adams) Colwell who predeceased him in 2019. He is survived by his two children, Scott W. Colwell, and his wife Julie, of Medfield, and Laura Colwell of Palm City, Florida; his sister, Virginia Anthony of Meredith, New Hampshire; four grandchildren, Ryan Colwell of Franklin, Cameron Colwell, and his wife Emese, of Franklin, Jennifer Benson, and her husband Garrett, of Port St. Lucie, Florida, and Stephanie Baez, and her husband Isaac, of Raleigh, North Carolina; and four great grandchildren, Quinn Colwell, Luella Baez, Maeve Colwell, and Calvin J. Colwell. He is also survived by nephews, Bob Page and Wayne Colwell; niece Bonnie Peterson; and his dedicated caregiver and cousin, Laura Mae Ellis. Cal was the brother of the late Walter Colwell, and the late Marie Christensen. Visiting hours will be held Friday, January 17th from 5 to 7 pm at the Folsom Funeral Home , 649 High Street, Westwood. A memorial service will be held for Cal on Saturday, January 18th at 11 am at the funeral home. Interment will be private.
