Crump, Susan A.

Susan Ann (Turiano) Crump, a resident of Norwood for the past nearly 4 years, and formerly of Walpole, Ocean Springs MS, Wayland, Newton Centre, Boston’s South End, and earlier places, died Thursday, December 12, 2024, at age 78. Susan was born June 22, 1946, in Rochester, New York, the daughter of Vincent Salvatore and Dorothy Jeanne Turiano. A sweet child, she had a bit of shyness but shed that as she grew in experience and strength.

She and her family lived in a number of homes around Rochester NY. They spent a number of her early years in one side of a duplex that also housed the Cali family, consisting of a dear aunt and uncle and group of cousins. Together they grew very close to each other over those years. They always remained so afterward, and her cousins look back fondly on those times.

Susan was an excellent student who played violin in the school orchestra, and she also played guitar in a 4-person folk group. She graduated from Our Lady of Mercy High School in Rochester NY in 1964. She earned her first degree not long after, a Registered Nurse Degree, from Labouré College of Healthcare in Boston, a leader in healthcare and nursing. Shortly thereafter she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Boston University. She later completed a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the University of Michigan and a Master’s Degree in midwifery from Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing in Hyden, Kentucky.

Susan began her career in medicine as a visiting nurse in Boston’s North End and went on to become a nurse at Harvard Community Healthcare. She progressed to become a nurse practitioner, a high level that permits prescribing some medications, and she rounded her career out in midwifery at several sites around Boston. She enjoyed her career and remained close to many with whom she had worked, and she made new friends wherever she went. While living in Wayland she and her husband volunteered with Ecclesia, an ecumenical church organization dedicated to helping provide healthcare and support to the poor and homeless in Boston.  She volunteered at National Parks while living in Ocean Springs.

Susan enjoyed music, reading, gardening, traveling, walking, biking, beaches, dining, especially with friends, swimming, hiking and other pursuits, and, most of all, her four precious grandchildren.

Susan is survived by her husband of more than 45 years, Stephen Walter Crump; her two sons, James Vincent Folcrum, and his wife Sarah, of Walpole, and Andrew Grace Crump, and his wife Carys, of Norwood; her grandchildren, Benjamin Joseph and Jackson Gray Folcrum, and Branwen Grace and Eleri John Crump; and her three sisters, Carole Taylor, and her husband Jack Taylor, of Morrisville, North Carolina, Mary Turiano-Fox, and her husband Michael Fox, of Spencerport, New York, and Kathleen Turiano of East Rochester, New York, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was the sister of the late Vincent J. Turiano. Visiting hours will be held Saturday, January 4, 2025 from 11 am to 2 pm at the Folsom and May Funeral Home, 85 Nichols Street, Norwood.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral Sunday, January 5th at Noon at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 95 Deerfield Avenue, Westwood. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, to make a donation to the kidney research fund of Susan’s oncologist, Dr. David McDermott, checks should be made out to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and mailed to David F. McDermott, 330 Brookline Ave, Kirstein 218, Boston, MA 02215. Please write “Dr David McDermott Kidney Fund” on the memo line of your check and include your name and address with your donation so that it may be acknowledged.
