Foley, Robert J.

Robert J. Foley of Dedham passed away on November 12th, 2021 after a long and arduous battle with cancer. Though he was born and lived in Boston for the early years of his life, he was a lifelong Dedham townie. Known as Bobby or Bob by everyone that knew and loved him; he had friends at the American Legion, the Vets and the Moose. The youngest of three children, he grew up with a special gift; he was an incredibly talented athlete—though baseball, football and hockey were where he really honed his craft. At the sheer mention of his name, anyone who got the chance to see him play for Dedham High School in the mid 70s surely remember his legacy. After graduation, he went into the trades and eventually began doing maintenance for Dedham Public Schools. That passion for sports, though, remained with him. First a freshwater fisherman, he quickly made the transition over to saltwater after buying his first boat; he never looked back. He was an avid fisherman who loved a good catch—the more difficult, the better. In fact, he would tell you that the best catch of his life was marrying his wife, Lynne (McGilly) Foley and having his daughter, Erin.  He is also survived by his brother, John J. Foley III of West Brookfield, and his sister, Kathleen Saulnier of West Roxbury. Though he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him, we can all take comfort in the fact that he is in a happier place, rod in hand, waiting to reel in his next catch. Bob’s visiting hours will be held Wednesday, Nov 17th from 4-7 pm at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, Dedham.  Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the funeral home Thursday, Nov 18th starting at 9 am and proceed with us to St. Mary’s Church, 420 High Street, Dedham for his Funeral Mass at 10 o clock.  Interment will follow in Brookdale Cemetery in Dedham.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Jimmy Fund, c/o Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284 would be appreciated.

Cook, Phyllis

Phyllis Mary (Pepin) Cook, a resident of North Attleboro, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2021, after a decade-long struggle with Alzheimer’s. She was 95. The last of eight children of the late Ernest and Natalie (Lavoie) Pepin, and wife of the late Carter G. Cook, she was previously a 40 year resident of Westwood.

Born in Worcester and later raised in Boston, Phyllis was a member of the second co-ed class of Northeastern University, majoring in chemistry and mathematics. Her early career centered on fabric and cosmetic chemistry where she met her future husband and was awarded a patent. Though a member of the team inventing the new idea of aerosol sprays, she gladly retired to be the devoted mother of three children.

Faced with being a single mother when suddenly widowed in 1969, Phyllis moved back from Port Washington, NY to continue a second career in education. A multi-disciplinary teacher, she taught math, science, and French in many area schools including Belmont, Randolph, and Boston (St. Theresa’s, Hyde Park High), eventually retiring from Jeremiah E. Burke High School in Dorchester.

In her personal life Phyllis was a gardener, avid book reader, and, when circumstances allowed, a world traveler. In retirement, she continued many of these things while also teaching ESL classes and then later devoting herself to the care of two elderly sisters.

She leaves her son C. James of Westborough, daughters Katherine L. of Fairfax, VA, and Sandra M. of N. Attleboro, a grandchild, Ada-Grace, and many nieces and nephews spread across the Boston and Chicago areas.

Visitation for Phyllis will be held on Thursday, November 11, 2021, from 4 to 8 pm, at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High St, Westwood. Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the funeral home on Friday November 12th, beginning at 9AM and proceed with us to St. Margaret Mary Church 845 High St, Westwood for her Funeral Mass at 10 AM. Joyce, Patricia M.

Pat Joyce was always a little different. Throughout her 84 years with us, she celebrated and struggled with those differences. Pat lived life on her own terms, her own way. Fully independent, she often rejected tradition, expectations and choices made by others. She always went to her grandchildren’s school events and celebrations wearing her favorite color, hot pink. Exuberant, sparkling, funny, inclusive, fiercely loyal, supportive, colorful, and life of the party are all terms commonly used to describe Nana Pat. Nana Pat loved cats, wild colors, interesting shoes, and a good mystery to solve. Her contagious laughter was the loudest in any room; ironically, that included the Dedham Public Library, where she worked for many years. She was an early adopter and big fan of polar fleece. Since it’s invention she gifted us all with polar fleece items: blankets, jackets, vests, and many other warm and cozy accessories. Pat didn’t often celebrate her good work and the many gifts she gave to others. We, who are left behind, will celebrate her legacy. Daughter of the late William and Helen Keefe of Roslindale; Pat was the beloved sister of John Keefe and his partner Sheryl Goodall, Anne Lyons and her husband John, Mary Venditti and her husband Carlo, and William Keefe and his wife Pamela. Her 13 grandchildren will miss Nana Pat terribly: Olivia, Francisco and Erin Sierra; James Joyce and Katelyn Sepmoree; Ali and Kyle Craver and Taylor Joyce; Garrett, Derrek, and Jillian Joyce; and Colleen and John Joyce. Her 3 great grandchildren, Kinley and Preston Craver, and Joaquin Sierra, will miss her at every holiday and celebration. Her many nieces and nephews will miss their Aunt Patsy. Pat considered her 6 children’s journey to independence to be her greatest source of pride: Elena Sierra and her husband Claudio, James Joyce and his wife Kathy, Michael Joyce and his wife Nancy, William Joyce and his wife Lisa, John Joyce, and Elizabeth Joyce; we will all remember Ma with love and appreciation. We will think of her whenever we take out our pink lipstick or put on our polar fleece vest; talk to our kitties, listen to a Doobie Brothers song, or sleep cuddled up with our favorite blanket. Nana left in her own way, wrapped in her favorite polar fleece blanket, listening to Marvin Gaye, with her daughter Elena and granddaughter Olivia by her side. If you think of Mom, please wear your polar fleece, lipstick, and hot pink clothes item in her honor. A private family celebration of Pat’s life will be held later this year. In her memory, donations can be made to Boston Healthcare for the Homeless at bhchp.org.
